Itanos Archaeological Site

Itanos is an archaeological site of the ancient harbour town and is located 25 km east of Sitia. Itanos flourished from the Minoan until the Byzantine times mainly due to its geographical position as a port and it developed trading with Egypt and the East. Itanos also mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotos.

The excavations are ongoing at the moment and scattered ruins are visible around the area. The site has no facilities so come well-prepared.

Tip: Itanos also has a marvelous beach that is nowhere busy as Vai which is situated 2 km down the road.
