    Matala Caves

Visit the unusual man-made caves of Matala!

In ancient times, Matala was the port of the ancient city of Phaistos during the Minoan period. After the destruction of Phaistos, Matala was occupied by the Gortynians and became the port of Gortyn during the Roman period.

The man-made caves next to the beach were used by the Romans as tombs and are considered a very important archaeological site.
