Historical Museum of Crete

The Historical Museum of Crete is located in Heraklion and very close to the Natural History Museum. It is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building the A. & M. Kalokairinos House constructed in 1903.

The museum presents a large collection of items from the early Christian times to the present day covering a time period of 1700 years. They include ceramics, sculptures, coins, manuscripts, as well as jewelry and wall paintings and a beautifully reconstructed interior of a traditional Cretan home.

The museum also houses two paintings by Domenikos Theotokopoulos or El Greco as most commonly known the Baptism of Christ and the View of Mount Sinai, as well as the Nikos Kazantzakis collection which includes the study and library of the author’s home in France.
