Historical and Folk Art Museum of Rethymno

The Historical and Folk Art Museum of Rethymno is located in the Old Town of Rethymno, close to all other points of interest such as the Rimondi Fountain, Neratze Mosque, the Archaeological Museum and others.

The museum is housed in a two-story restored Venetian building and was founded in 1974. It displays a collection of historical and folk items from Crete and particularly from the prefecture of Rethymno from the 4th century BC.

The exhibits come mainly from donations. There are numerous collections which cover traditional methods of farming and the preparation of bread, and traditional professions, such as that of the blacksmith, shoemaker etc.

The historical collection contains artifacts from the 4th century BC to the 20th century AD, mainly from the area of Rethymno. There is also an impressive weaponry collection used by Cretans during their wars of Crete, as well as documents, photographs, maps and various other items from Arcadi, the Battle of Crete.

Opening Times: Monday to Saturday 10:00-15:00

Admission Fee: Full ticket 4 euro.
