1Agia Pelagia Beach
Heraklion has plenty of beaches to chose from and Agia Pelagia ranks among the most favorite ones. It has a beautiful pebbly beach with magnificent waters that can get quite popular over the summer months. There’s a reason for it!
Matala is one of the best places to visit when you are in Heraklion as there are many things to see. There is a long sandy beach which is rather unique as it’s secluded with the mountain caves vista making it an experience not to be missed.
Star beach has been the choice of many tourists and locals for years now. It has been well looked after and resembles an exotic location of a different continent. In addition there are many activities and water sports to suit all tastes.
Komos beach is one of the longest beaches on the island hence it was one of the ports of ancient Pheastos. The ruins of ancient Kommos are still visible among the sands dunes. Also if you were to visit in September, you might get a glimpse of the protected sea turtles Caretta Caretta that nest in the sand of the beach.
Ligaria beach is located close to Agia Pelagia and it is fairly similar. A beautiful beach with clear waters that is somewhat more exclusive that Agia Pelagia. So if you like to feel a bit more private, Ligaria is a great choice, especially if you manage to get a spot on the right side behind the rocks.
